caramel sauce
Ali and I usually hangout at a local coffee shop near our place. We were there this evening and Ali ordered his usual iced mocha, I, on the other hand, asked for a caramel shake. But then the barista told me that they don’t have caramel shake, he offered chocolate but I was not in a chocolatey mood so I ended up ordering iced mocha too.
As we were walking home, I’m still kinda craving for caramel. So when I got home, I quickly googled the ingredients of caramel sauce. There are several recipe variations of caramel sauce. I frantically searched my cupboard if I have the items to make my own caramel sauce.
I got sugar, which is ingredient number 1 (1 cup), next is butter (6 tablespoons) - check, and cream (it says half cup heavy cream in the recipe, I got all-purpose cream, that will do I guess, so…) - check.
First, you have to melt the sugar in a saucepan and whisk it constantly. I don’t have a whisk handy so I just stirred it vigorously with a large spoon as it melts. Then I added the butter and continuously stirred the mixture. As the butter is completely melted, I took the pan from the heat and added the cream. The mixture will get really bubbly so you have to be careful so you won’t get burned. Let the sauce sit for a couple of minutes, then transfer to a glass container.

I found an apple in the fridge so I sliced it up and drizzled it with a few teaspoons of the caramel sauce that I made. Except for a bit of the burnt sugar taste, my sauce turned up rather tasty. I guess skipping the whisking part made the sugar burn at the bottom but it was still pretty good. You can use this sauce with any fruit, vanilla ice cream would be nice too. Maybe I’ll come up with my own caramel coffee recipe one of these days.
