On criticism

Criticism is really easy to give yet so difficult to take. I’ve had my fair share of criticism and sometimes I still feel I don’t get it. I usually take it with a grain of salt especially if they’re coming from people who believe that they are pure geniuses when in fact they are really clueless about lots of things. Well I guess even if the criticism came from someone close to me and it was said in a very nice way, it still wouldn’t be easy to take. A part of me doesn’t want to admit that I screwed up. A part of me hates to be told that I could be wrong.

Now I am really trying my best to improve how I respond to criticism. I know when it is sincere and not just something to piss me off. There are some who are quite harsh when it comes to giving criticisms and we cannot always avoid them. I try to be less defensive when dealing with those people. Their critiques may be outrageous and flat-out foolish but I still give them the benefit of the doubt to see where they’re coming from.

I guess we just have to admit that we cannot always be right. Next time I hear somebody giving me a critique, I’ll try to be as gracious in hearing them out as possible. They may or may not have our best interests in mind but let’s just be open to what they’re going to say and one way or another, we may even learn a few things.

I have my fair share of criticism during my time (I feel very old just by saying this… hehehe) but that doesn’t mean I have to go back to my cave and stay there. What I do is listen, filter, then do what I have to do. Criticisms are not always bad, you’ll just have to see through it.

As the saying goes, “If This Doesn’t Kill You, It Will Make You Stronger”.

Here is Dale Carnegie’s take on criticism

    1. Remember that unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment.
    2. Do the very best you can.
    3. Analyze your own mistakes and criticize yourself.

There is one rule that helps me handle criticism or at least soften the blow …. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE BETTER AND SMARTER THAN I AM…
