Stardust 2007

After more than a week of prodding and telling me how good Neil Gaiman’s novels were, I agreed to watch Stardust with Ali. And I’m glad I did. I thought it would be something like Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter adventure type film. Personally, I don’t really like that genre. Good thing Stardust turned out to be enchantingly wonderful with just the right amount of sweetness. I can even watch it again and still be entertained as I did the first time.

The actors’ performances in the movie were good especially the main character played by Charlie Cox and Robert De Niro’s portrayal as a gay sky pirate. The effects were also pretty cool. But I won’t talk much about the technical aspect of the movie. I’d rather concentrate on the message which I think is really beautiful. I guess it’s about how love can make even the darkest moments in our lives aglow. I think it’s a bit cheesy as I say it but I believe it. It’s about how love can make our lives more bearable. Trite, but we know it’s true.

Everybody has somebody they care about. Everybody has their say about love, about the joy and the pain and everything else that it brings. Here are some of Yvaine’s (Claire Danes’ character) lines from the movie:

You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn’t true. I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and… What I’m trying to say, Tristan is… I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I’d know it for myself. My heart… It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it’s trying to escape because it doesn’t belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I’d wish for nothing in exchange - no fits. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.

I guess a lot of people have posted this on their websites already because these are probably the most memorable lines in the film. Unconditional love is rare but love can really be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, but beautiful just the same.

I like that movie too. I didn’t want to watch it at first and I couldn’t imagine it being good but people around me were telling me that it was good and yes, they were right about it.

I have to disagree with you on Harry Potter. I love the movies and I love the books even more. Those were the books that I read so fast and I still feel sad that there’s no more Harry Potter book to long for. You should try it cuz.

@gyk: Thanks for dropping by. I checked out your website and I think your portfolio is pretty neat. Keep it up! :)

@nats: I didn’t know you like reading books cuz. I’m sure the creator of Harry Potter is a fab writer but I’m just not into it, I guess.
