The constant pursuit of happiness
Is happiness just a state of mind? If it is, then most people probably find it quite elusive because it seems like a never ending search.
I think the materialistic world that we live in causes our perception of happiness to be distorted. Well, yes, we need money and whether we admit it or not, it can buy happiness. Temporary happiness, that is. Anybody who said that money can’t buy happiness hasn’t experienced wandering on the streets, looking for leftovers in garbage cans. A person has basic needs in order to live and to meet those needs, money is necessary. There’s a difference between having your needs fulfilled and desiring to have excess amounts money to make you happy.
So what really makes you happy? Maybe it’s the bittersweet taste of chocolate that you really like, or flowers from a loved one, or maybe getting a raise. Basically, happiness is just an emotional experience. A wonderful emotional experience if we may classify it. It’s a feeling common to a lot of different experiences, on different levels perhaps but it’s still that good and satisfied feeling that we have.
In order to keep experiencing this wonderful feeling, I guess we just need to examine ourselves for a while and know the difference between a temporary sense of happiness and the true happiness.
In this consumer driven society it’s easier settle for the temporary fix, we rely on those shiny new things to make us happy. It’s quite difficult to settle with what we have, most of the time, we have insatiable wants. Lasting happiness isn’t easy to achieve because of the ways we set in finding it.
